The states getting rebuilt after the civil war
Reconstruction was the period following the Civil War and during this era the focus was rebuilding the United States mostly the south. The three major questions that needed to be answered where on the terms would confederacy be aloud back into the union, what was the place of the freed blacks in the south, and who were seen as traitors in the north. The three amendments which altered the rights of African Americans where the 13th amendment abolished slavery in all states and territories, The 14th amendment prohibited states from depriving any male citizens of equal protection under the law regardless of race and the 15th amendment which granted African American males the right to vote. Andrew Johnson's policy toward the south appoint provisional governors, outline steps for creation of new state governments and to pardon most southern whites. The new southern legistalures passed the military reconstruction acts of 1867 and punished the south. The position of radical republicans that where elected in 1866 where to enforce black codes to control the labor and behavior of former slaves and African Americans. The military reconstruction acts of 1867 was when the south got divided into five military districts and outlined how the new governments would be designed. The group that emerged as opposition to the radical republicans was the KKK and they took actions by beatings, lynchings, and massacres.
